Working in Birmingham

Digital marketing for Birmingham businesses

Birmingham is the largest city outside the capital and one of the least contested major search markets in England. For a lot of categories here, the work that stopped being enough elsewhere still moves the results.

Who is here

The businesses we work with in this market

The West Midlands business base is broader than its reputation. Engineering, tooling, automotive supply, fabrication and components sit alongside a large professional services sector in the city centre, a substantial public and education sector, and a consumer economy serving several million people across the conurbation.

The industrial firms are the ones we find most interesting to work with, partly because the marketing gap is so wide. Long-established companies with real technical authority frequently have no way for a buyer to find them on the search that buyer is actually running.

On the consumer side the population is young by UK standards and highly diverse, with substantial communities whose first language is not English and whose media habits do not match the national average. Marketing built from national assumptions misses a meaningful part of the market here.

There is also a growing professional and financial services presence in the city centre, a good deal of it relocated from the capital, competing for staff and for clients on a national footing rather than a local one.

Search behaviour

How search works differently here

Search is not uniform across markets. Engine share, language, device mix and local platforms all shift what a strategy should prioritise.

  • Keyword tools and analytics both need their geography constrained before they can be trusted, because Birmingham, Alabama absorbs a share of anything reported for the term. Unfiltered volumes overstate the opportunity and unfiltered reporting flatters the traffic.
  • Town identity beats city identity across most of the conurbation. Queries carry Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley, Solihull and West Bromwich far more often than the regional or the city label, and treating them as suburbs of one keyword is the standard mistake.
  • Industrial buyers search on specification rather than category — a material, a standard, a size, a part number — and they are usually well into a long, mostly invisible evaluation before they contact anybody. Category pages do not answer those searches; technical pages do.
  • Multilingual search is a real dimension in parts of the city. For some consumer categories a proportion of demand is expressed in another language, and for anything with an advice component that changes both the keyword set and the format of the answer.
  • Because fewer competitors here have done the fundamentals, doing them well has a disproportionate effect. Structured product data, genuine technical content and a fast site still separate businesses in this market in a way they no longer do in the capital.

The market

What makes Birmingham different

Birmingham is the largest English city outside the capital and the conurbation around it is larger again, yet the competitive intensity of its commercial results is closer to that of a mid-sized city. Scale and contest do not match, and the gap between them is the opportunity.

The reason is mostly supply. There are fewer agencies per business here than in Manchester or the capital, and a large part of the business base grew through trade relationships, distributors and repeat custom rather than through marketing.

It also means expectations get set locally. A West Midlands manufacturer benchmarking against its neighbours will conclude it is doing fine, right up until an overseas competitor with proper technical content starts appearing on the searches its buyers run.

Constraints

Rules that shape marketing in this market

  • UK GDPR and PECR govern the data side, and business-to-business marketing has narrower exemptions than most industrial firms assume. Corporate subscribers are treated differently from individuals for electronic marketing, but sole traders and partnerships are not, which catches out anybody holding a trade customer list.
  • Product and technical claims carry real substantiation risk. Statements about performance, compliance with a standard, or accreditation must be evidenced, and the CAP Code applies to a manufacturer website exactly as it applies to a consumer brand.
  • Anything published in more than one language should be translated by a person and reviewed by somebody who would notice a claim shifting meaning between versions. Poor translation is a credibility problem and a compliance problem at the same time.
  • This is context, not legal advice. Standards, accreditation rules and consumer regulations change, and your own advisers should confirm what applies to your products before anything is published.

Most in demand

What businesses here usually come to us for

  • Technical SEO

Crawling, rendering, indexing, site architecture, performance and migrations. Technical SEO rarely wins a ranking on its own — but technical problems quietly cap everything else, and they are the cheapest thing on this site to get wrong.

  • Multi-location SEO

Head office wants consistency and compliance. The branch wants to sound like it belongs to its town. Every multi-location search problem lives in that gap — identical location pages, contested profiles, franchisees building their own sites. We design the system that resolves it.

  • Google Ads

Search is demand capture. The person is already looking, so the work is making sure you pay for the ones who intend to buy, land them on a page that matches what they asked, and measure which of them turned into revenue.

  • Local SEO

Local search is decided by different signals than the rest of SEO — proximity, profile quality, review behaviour and how clearly your service area is defined. We work all of them, for single locations and for multi-location businesses.

How we work here

We serve this market remotely, and we say so

We work with West Midlands businesses remotely. There is no Birmingham office, no local number and nobody on our side who lives in the region, and we would rather put that in writing than let a map pin imply otherwise.

For technical clients the practical part of working with us is a structured discovery: recorded time with the people who actually know the product, turned into content, rather than a questionnaire emailed to a marketing coordinator.

We plan around long buying cycles. Reporting monthly enquiry counts misrepresents a category where a buyer researches for six months, so we agree at the start which leading indicators the work will be judged on.

Site visits, factory photography and trade show material need somebody present. We say so, arrange it locally and quote it separately rather than folding it into a retainer and hoping nobody asks.

Questions

Working with us from Birmingham

Our buyers telephone us. Why would we invest in search?

Because the telephone call is the end of a process that now starts online. An industrial buyer typically shortlists suppliers from search results and technical documents long before anyone picks up a handset.

The measurable question is not whether people buy online. It is whether you appear at the point where the shortlist gets written, and for most West Midlands manufacturers the honest answer is currently no.

How much of our data is actually about the other Birmingham?

Enough to matter, and it varies by tool and by category. Keyword volumes, broad paid targeting and unfiltered analytics all mix the two cities unless the geography is constrained deliberately.

It is a quick thing to correct and a slow thing to notice. We would rather establish a clean baseline first than build a plan on numbers that describe Alabama.

Should we target Birmingham or the Black Country towns?

Both, described separately. The conurbation is a set of towns with strong distinct identities, and residents of Walsall or Dudley do not search as though they live in Birmingham.

For a business serving the whole area that usually means one clear statement of coverage plus genuinely different content where the work itself differs, rather than a page per town saying the same thing.

Our products are highly technical. Can an agency write about them?

Not from a briefing document, no. The only method that works is spending recorded time with your engineers and sales people, drafting from that, and having them correct it before anything is published.

We will not publish a specification we cannot source back to you. If a claim about performance or compliance cannot be evidenced, it does not go on the page.

Do you have an office in Birmingham?

No. We have no premises, no staff and no telephone number in Birmingham or anywhere in the West Midlands, and we work with clients here remotely.

Where a project genuinely needs someone on site — a factory shoot, a product photography session — we arrange it locally and quote it as a separate line rather than implying it is included.
