Working in Calgary

Digital marketing for Calgary businesses

A head-office city where most of the money is B2B. Energy corporates, engineering and professional firms, and a fast-growing technology sector mean long sales cycles, technical buyers and search behaviour that looks nothing like a consumer market.

Search behaviour

How search works differently here

Search is not uniform across markets. Engine share, language, device mix and local platforms all shift what a strategy should prioritise.

  • Query volume is low and value is high. Commercial terms in industrial, engineering and specialist B2B categories often show a handful of searches a month, and the mistake is dismissing them — a single one of those visitors can represent a contract worth more than a year of consumer traffic.
  • Buyers search in the language of their discipline. Specifications, standards, service classes, equipment names and regulatory terms carry the intent, and content written in marketing language simply does not intersect with how these people look for suppliers.
  • The research pattern is long and multi-person. A technical evaluator, a commercial buyer and an executive sponsor each search differently and at different times, so the site needs material for all three rather than one page pitched at a generic decision maker.
  • LinkedIn does more of the discovery work here than in most Canadian cities, because the audience is concentrated in identifiable companies and roles. That makes targeted paid social and account-based approaches viable in a way they are not for local consumer businesses.
  • A meaningful share of Calgary B2B demand originates outside Canada, particularly in the American energy and industrial corridors. Sites that read as strictly local quietly suppress that demand, and correcting it is a content and structure question rather than a translation one.

The market

What makes Calgary different

Calgary is a corporate city in a way its population size does not suggest. Head offices, engineering firms, law and accounting practices and the professional infrastructure around them concentrate a lot of high-value B2B activity into a compact business district.

The city has been through a hard structural adjustment. A long period of high downtown office vacancy after the mid-2010s energy downturn prompted deliberate conversion and diversification efforts, and the result is a business community noticeably more open to new sectors than it was.

Technology and startups now sit alongside energy rather than in its shadow, spanning financial technology, agricultural technology, logistics, health and energy-transition software. Many of these firms sell internationally from a Calgary base.

The annual Stampede period genuinely reorganises the commercial calendar for about ten days each July. Corporate hospitality, events, hotels and restaurants concentrate demand while a good deal of ordinary B2B activity pauses, and planning around it is more useful than ignoring it.

Compared with Vancouver or Montreal, this is a less consumer-driven and more transactional market. Relationships, referral within industry and demonstrable technical competence carry more weight than brand affinity.

Who is here

The businesses we work with in this market

Energy remains the largest single force — producers, midstream operators, service companies and the engineering and consulting firms that serve them. Their marketing challenge is credibility with specialist audiences rather than reach.

Professional services are unusually dense: legal, accounting, engineering, geoscience, land and environmental consulting, all selling expertise to corporate buyers on long relationships and formal procurement.

The technology sector has grown into something substantial, with software companies in financial services, agriculture, logistics, energy data and health. These businesses need international pipeline and generally treat Calgary as a base rather than a market.

Industrial supply, equipment, fabrication and transport operate across the region and into the wider province, selling to buyers who evaluate on specification, availability, certification and service response.

There is a consumer layer as well — retail, hospitality, health, home services — but it is smaller relative to the B2B economy than in most Canadian cities of comparable size.

Most in demand

What businesses here usually come to us for

  • B2B SEO

In B2B the person searching is often not the person signing. A handful of searches a month can be worth more than a hundred thousand sessions, and the page has to survive being forwarded to a finance director, a security reviewer and a procurement team.

  • LinkedIn Ads

LinkedIn costs more per click than any mainstream channel, and that is defensible only when one closed contract pays for a great many clicks. Most of this page is about working out whether that is true for you before you spend anything.

  • Content strategy

A content strategy is mostly a set of decisions about what not to make: which topics you have no realistic claim to, which existing pages should be merged or removed, and which pieces are worth more effort than anything new.

  • Analytics & attribution

Perfect attribution does not exist. What does exist is a measurement setup you trust, a written account of where it is blind, and a way to test the questions attribution cannot answer. That is a better position than most businesses are in.

How we work here

We serve this market remotely, and we say so

We work with Calgary businesses remotely. There is no office, no local staff and no Calgary number, and in a market that values being told things straight this is not a difficult thing to say.

B2B work here depends on access to your subject-matter experts rather than on our proximity. The engineers, consultants and operators inside your business hold the knowledge that makes content credible, and our job is to interview them properly and turn it into material buyers respect.

Reporting is built around pipeline rather than sessions, because a marketing programme measured on traffic will look wrong in a market where twelve of the right visitors is a good month. We schedule in Mountain Time and work to your sales cycle rather than a monthly reporting habit.

Constraints

Rules that shape marketing in this market

  • Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act applies to organisations here, with the provincial commissioner as regulator and a mandatory duty to report breaches creating a real risk of significant harm. For B2B companies running large CRM and outbound programmes, that duty and the consent expectations around it deserve genuine attention rather than a copied privacy notice.
  • CASL is the constraint that catches Calgary B2B teams most often. Business-to-business outbound is not exempt simply because it is B2B, and prospecting programmes need to be built on the consent, identification and unsubscribe requirements from the outset rather than corrected after they scale.
  • Claims about certification, safety record, technical capability, environmental performance and regulatory standing are checkable and are checked by procurement. Overstating any of them is a commercial risk as much as a compliance one, and public-company clients face disclosure considerations on top. We are not lawyers and give no legal advice; anything of that kind goes through your own counsel and compliance function.

Questions

Working with us from Calgary

Our keywords have almost no search volume. Is SEO pointless for us?

No, but the way you measure it has to change. In specialist B2B categories the entire addressable audience may be a few hundred people, and a term with twenty searches a month can be the most valuable page on your site.

We size opportunity by who is searching and what a deal is worth, not by volume. If the analysis says the demand genuinely is not there, we will tell you that and point at a different channel instead.

How do you write content credible enough for engineers?

By getting it from your people. We interview the engineers, consultants or operators who actually do the work and build the content from those conversations, then have them review it before it publishes.

Written any other way it fails immediately with this audience. Technical buyers can tell within a paragraph whether the writer understood the subject, and the ones in Calgary have read a great deal of marketing that did not.

Our sales cycle is nine months. How is any of this measured?

With a model that tolerates the length. Last-click attribution is useless across a nine-month, multi-person buying process, so we track pipeline influence, the queries that appear early in it, and how many qualified conversations a channel contributes to.

That means the first honest read on performance takes longer than in a consumer market. We set that expectation at the start rather than reporting encouraging traffic numbers for three quarters.

We sell into the United States. Should the site say we are Canadian?

Say it clearly, but do not let it be the first impression. American industrial and energy buyers are used to Canadian suppliers, so the issue is rarely nationality — it is a site structured so tightly around Calgary that it reads as a regional firm with a regional catchment.

The work is separating capability content from location content, so a buyer in Houston or Denver finds what you do before they find where you are.

Do you have a Calgary office?

No. We have no office, address or staff in Calgary and we serve clients here remotely, working in Mountain Time.

For B2B search and content work, what determines quality is access to your experts and the standard of the material we produce with them, not whether the writer is downtown.
