Working in Australia
Digital marketing for Australian businesses
Demand concentrated in a handful of coastal metros, enormous service areas, consumer law that is genuinely enforced, and a time zone that makes most offshore agencies awkward to work with.
The market
What makes Australia different
Australian commercial demand is concentrated to an unusual degree. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide account for the large majority of it, which means a national campaign is in practice a set of metro campaigns with different competitive dynamics in each.
Regional Australia is a genuinely different market rather than a smaller version of the metros. Search volumes are thin, competition is often minimal, and a business can dominate a regional category for a fraction of what a metro position costs — but the ceiling is correspondingly lower and needs to be sized honestly before anyone commits budget.
Distances change how local marketing works. A service area that looks reasonable on a map may take two hours to cross, and the difference between a suburb a customer recognises as local and one they do not is decided at a much finer granularity than a radius setting allows.
Search behaviour
How search works differently here
Search is not uniform across markets. Engine share, language, device mix and local platforms all shift what a strategy should prioritise.
- Google share is very high, higher than in the United States, with Bing negligible outside corporate environments.
- Suburb-level search is the norm in metro areas. Australians search by suburb far more consistently than by city, and a business targeting a capital city name is frequently invisible in the suburbs where its customers actually are.
- Mobile share is high and connectivity outside metros is variable, which makes page weight a genuine commercial constraint rather than a technical nicety.
- Australian English spelling and terminology matter, and so does local vocabulary — the words used for trades, services and products differ enough from American English to signal an offshore site immediately.
- Seasonality runs opposite to the northern hemisphere, which sounds obvious and is routinely got wrong by content calendars imported from overseas agencies.
Strong fit
Industries where we see the clearest opportunity here
Written for Australia-relevant sectors
- Plumbing marketingOwn the emergency window, then convert one-off callouts into the higher-value repipe, water heater and bathroom work that actually carries margin.
- HVAC marketingOwn the emergency searches in your service area, then use the quieter months to build the installation pipeline that actually carries the margin.
- Roofing marketingBe one of the three companies quoting, and be the one that looks least risky by the time the homeowner decides.
- Restoration & Emergency Services marketingCapture the homeowner searching at midnight, and build the referral relationships that send work regardless of what the search results do.
Who is here
The businesses we work with in this market
Trades and home services are a large part of the market, with the same emergency-versus-planned demand split seen elsewhere but spread across service areas that are considerably larger.
Professional practices — legal, dental, medical, allied health, accounting — are concentrated in metro suburbs and compete at suburb level rather than city level, which most of them under-appreciate.
Ecommerce and direct-to-consumer brands form a growing segment, frequently constrained by shipping economics across a large country and by competition from international sellers with better freight positions.
Most in demand
What businesses here usually come to us for
SEO services
We build organic growth around the searches that actually lead to revenue: the technical foundation, the pages that answer real buying questions, and the authority that makes those pages win.
Local SEO
Local search is decided by different signals than the rest of SEO — proximity, profile quality, review behaviour and how clearly your service area is defined. We work all of them, for single locations and for multi-location businesses.
Paid media
Google, Microsoft, Meta, LinkedIn and the rest — managed against cost per acquired customer and lead quality. If the account cannot tell you which spend produced revenue, the optimisation has been guesswork.
Web design & development
Most websites are judged on how they look and fail on what they do. We decide the search structure and the conversion logic before the first screen is designed, then build something fast enough and clear enough to earn the enquiry.
How we work here
We serve this market remotely, and we say so
We work with Australian businesses remotely, and we will be direct about what that means. There is limited natural overlap between Australian business hours and ours, so we schedule calls into the early morning or late evening on our side rather than expecting you to take a call at 11pm.
Practically, most delivery is asynchronous and unaffected. What does change is same-day turnaround on urgent requests — we hold a defined window each day for Australian clients and we tell you what falls outside it rather than promising responsiveness we cannot sustain.
We do not have an Australian office and we do not list one. If proximity is genuinely important for your project, a local agency may serve you better and we will say so.
Constraints
Rules that shape marketing in this market
- Australian Consumer Law prohibits misleading or deceptive conduct, and it is enforced actively by the ACCC. Claims about results, savings, pricing and comparisons need to be substantiated, and "was/now" pricing and free-offer claims receive particular attention.
- The Spam Act governs commercial electronic messages and requires consent, sender identification and a functional unsubscribe. It applies to email and SMS, and the consent standard is closer to the Canadian regime than the American one.
- Privacy is governed by the Privacy Act and the Australian Privacy Principles, with reforms tightening obligations over recent years. Businesses handling personal information should be reviewing consent and disclosure practices rather than assuming an old policy still suffices.
- Regulated professions are governed at state and territory level, and health practitioner advertising in particular is tightly constrained under national law — testimonials in health advertising are restricted in a way that surprises most practices.
Questions
Working with us from Australia
You are not in our time zone. How does that actually work?
Most of the work is asynchronous and unaffected — content, technical work, builds, reporting and campaign management do not require both parties awake simultaneously.
What it affects is same-day turnaround on urgent requests. We hold a defined daily window that overlaps Australian business hours for calls and urgent items, and we tell you plainly what falls outside it. If your project genuinely needs someone reachable at any moment during your day, a local agency is a better fit and we will say so.
Should we target by city or by suburb?
Suburb, in metro areas. Australians search by suburb far more consistently than by city, and a business optimising for a capital city name is often invisible in the suburbs where its customers are.
That does not mean a page for every suburb — that is the doorway pattern search engines discount. It means being specific about the suburbs you genuinely serve, and building pages only where there is something real to say.
We are regional. Is there enough demand to justify this?
Sometimes, and the honest answer requires sizing it first. Regional search volumes are thin, but competition is often close to nonexistent, so the cost of dominating a regional category can be a fraction of a metro position.
The ceiling is lower though, and we would rather tell you that before you commit than discover it together in month six.
We had a bad experience with cheap offshore SEO. What is different?
The tactics, primarily. Most damage from cheap offshore work comes from bought links, spun content and mass thin pages — all of which create a liability on your domain that outlives the engagement.
We do not buy links, we do not publish content we would not put our name on, and we do not create city-swapped pages. Our standards page lists what we refuse to do, and those refusals are the reason our work takes longer.
Do you understand Australian advertising rules?
Well enough to build within them and to flag what needs your advice. Australian Consumer Law is enforced actively, the Spam Act sets a real consent standard, and health practitioner advertising is more tightly constrained than most practices expect — testimonials in particular.
We design to those constraints rather than treating them as a review at the end. We are not lawyers, and anything close to the line goes to yours.
