What answer engine optimisation is
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of making a source easy for an answer engine to extract a single, correct, attributable answer from. An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with a direct answer rather than a list of links: AI Overviews and featured snippets in Google, voice assistants, and the answer surfaces built into search and chat products. AEO is concerned with one outcome — being the source the machine uses when there is one right answer to give.
Two words in that definition are doing most of the work. Extract, because the system is lifting something you wrote rather than composing around it; and single, because AEO is the case where one source supplies the answer. When an answer is assembled from several sources at once, the discipline changes and you are into generative engine optimisation instead.
The practical consequence is that the unit of optimisation is the passage, not the page. A page can be accurate, well-researched and correctly structured for search, and still be unusable to an answer engine because the answer is spread across four paragraphs and a caveat instead of being stated once, cleanly, in a form that can be lifted without losing its meaning.

Question-shaped content
Content organised around the questions people actually ask, in their words, with the question visible as a heading and the answer immediately beneath it. Not a page that eventually addresses the question in its fourth section.
Extractable structure
A direct answer of two or three sentences before the nuance, lists that are genuinely lists, tables that are marked up as tables, and headings that describe rather than tease. Structure here is not decoration; it determines whether an answer can be lifted cleanly at all.
Factual precision and currency
Specific figures, named sources, explicit dates, and a visible sense of when the page was last checked. Answer engines are conservative about ambiguity, and a hedged sentence is a poor candidate for extraction even when it is more honest.
Entity clarity
Being unambiguous about what and who the page is about — the organisation, the product, the person, the place — so a system can connect the answer to a known thing rather than to a string of words. This is where structured data earns its place.
Source credibility
Whether the claim is corroborated elsewhere, whether the author is identifiable, and whether the site has a record of being right about this subject. Extraction is a trust decision before it is a formatting decision.

Boundaries
What answer engine optimisation is not
Most of the confusion around the term comes from these six claims, all of which are commonly made and none of which is accurate.
- It is not a separate channel. It has no traffic source, no budget of its own and no independent audience; it is a property of content that also has to be found in the ordinary way.
- It is not schema markup. Structured data supports understanding and eligibility for certain features. It does not cause extraction, and no markup guarantees any appearance.
- It is not a replacement for SEO. A source that cannot be discovered, crawled and indexed cannot be extracted, so the underlying search work remains a precondition.
- It is not prompt engineering. Writing your pages to address a chatbot, or embedding instructions for a model, is neither how retrieval works nor a defensible practice.
- It is not something that can be bought. There is no paid placement in an organic answer, and any offer of one is describing an advertising product or nothing at all.
- It is not measurable by rank tracking alone. Position data does not tell you whether your text was used in an answer, only where a link appeared.
Honest caveats
Where the discipline is genuinely unsettled
Measurement is the weakest part. There is no complete record of the answers you appeared in, no equivalent of an impressions log for extraction, and the systems producing answers vary their behaviour without notice. Anyone describing AEO reporting as comprehensive is describing a sample and calling it a census.
Attribution is the second gap. When someone reads an answer, does not click, and arrives three days later by typing your brand name into a browser, nothing in the analytics records why. Some of the value of being the extracted answer shows up as direct and branded traffic that no model will ever assign correctly.
And volatility is real. Answer surfaces appear and disappear for the same question within weeks, sometimes because the system changed and sometimes because the question got easier or harder to answer confidently. That argues for treating AEO as a way of writing rather than as a campaign — the practices that make a passage extractable also make it clearer for a human reader, which is the part of the return that does not evaporate.

Is AEO different from SEO?
It is a subset with a different win condition. SEO optimises for a page to be ranked and clicked; AEO optimises for a passage to be extracted and presented as the answer.
The two overlap substantially, because a source that cannot be found cannot be extracted. What differs is the unit of work — the passage rather than the page — and the way success is observed.
Does structured data make you the answer?
No. Structured data helps a machine understand what a page is about and makes some result types eligible, but it does not cause an answer to be drawn from you, and no markup guarantees any appearance.
It is best understood as a clarity aid rather than a lever. A page with perfect markup and a vague answer will lose to a page with no markup and a precise one.
How is answer engine optimisation measured?
Imperfectly, and any honest description says so. There is no complete log of every answer surface you appear in, so measurement is sampling: running your important questions repeatedly across the relevant systems and recording whether you are used, how you are described, and what is cited alongside you.
Supporting signals help. Impressions holding while clicks fall on question-shaped queries usually indicates that answers are being resolved on the results page rather than that visibility has been lost.
Does being the extracted answer cost you clicks?
Sometimes, and that has to be part of the decision. If a question is fully answered on the results page, some people who would have visited no longer need to.
Whether that matters depends on the question. Losing a click on a definition you were never going to monetise is cheap; losing one on a comparison query at the point of purchase is not. Choose the questions you want to own accordingly.
Is AEO the same thing as GEO?
No. AEO concerns being the single source an answer is extracted from. Generative engine optimisation concerns being one of several sources a longer answer is synthesised from, where no single page controls the wording.
The distinction matters because the work differs. Extraction rewards a clean, liftable statement on your own page; synthesis rewards consistent, corroborated evidence about you across sources you do not control.
